For 2010 our prices per person per night are from £22.50 to £29.50.

Xmas and New Year by arrangement - with a minimum stay of 3 days.

There is a single person's supplement of £10 - but this is only charged at busy times when we could have let the room to two persons.

Our cancellation policy is, where possible, to re-let a cancelled booking. Where this is not possible any deposit paid is non- refundable.

Where and How to find us

Culgaith is just off the A66 about 5 miles east of Penrith and the M6. (There is a link to a map below). We are very conveniently placed if you want to visit the Lakes, Yorkshire Dales, Eden Valley, Hadrian's Wall and Southern Scotland etc.

Many of our overnight visitors have found that we are a convenient overnight stop on their way travelling to or from Scotland.

If all this seems too complicated - just follow the rainbow!

As far as our village itself is concerned, Culgaith (meaning "Corner Wood") is 1 mile from the A66 between Penrith and Appleby. It dates from medieval times and is one of a line of small villages, which follow the "Fell side" of the Pennines. We are only about 1/4 mile from the beautiful River Eden (one of the best trout and salmon rivers in England) and the village commands a unique panoramic view of the Lake District, Pennines and Howgill Fells.
There are about 400 people living in the village and although this seems quite small we have a school and recreation ground, Garden Centre and (most important of all) an Inn - The Black Swan. (We keep copies of their menu).

Introduction Shepherds Croft provides Bed & Breakfast serviced accommodation for guests in a converted 3 - storey Bank Byre. Please read the other pages of this site for more details.

Pre arrival

• You may contact us by phone or email - or visit our website.

• The nearest railway station in 3.5 miles away at Langwathby. The nearest main-line station is 8 miles away in Penrith where there is a shop-mobility scheme.

• There is a limited fully-accessible bus-service provided by the Fellrunner Village Bus Ltd. (01768 88232) For travel information ring Traveline (0870 606 2 608 or visit the website at www.cumbria.gov.uk

• Persons with limited mobility may find access difficult in some areas. Please ring us to discuss your requirements.

• The house is not suitable for wheel-chair users.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

• Car parking for 4 cars is on the cobbled frontage immediately in front of the house. Access is along sandstone-flagged walkways. There is an intercom at the front of the house where assistance can be summoned. A 175 mm-high step at the 840 mm-wide front door leads directly into the entrance porch.

Main Entrance & Reception

• Arrival time is usually mid to late afternoon but at any time between 08.00 hrs and 12.00 hrs with prior arrangement. Late arrivals are expected to have regard to others in the house.

• Seating space is provided in the entrance porch and there is ample room to leave luggage/outdoor clothing etc. Luggage will be carried to the rooms by the proprietors.

• The stairs from the entrance porch to the residents lounge have a rising of 220 mm and a minimum width of 725 mm. These dimensions apply to all stairs in the house.

Public Areas - General(Internal)

• The house has 3 floors. The entrance is on the lower ground floor, residents lounge/dining room are on the middle ground floor (also at ground level) and the bedrooms and bathroom are on the upper floor.

• The minimum width of door/stairs and corridors is 725 mm.

Public Areas - Bathroom

• The large family bathroom and WC has a shower located in the bath. (height 780 mm)

• There is a grab rail behind the bath/shower.

Dining room and lounge

• The residents lounge/dining room is well and uniformly lit with extra lighting available for reading.

Bedrooms

• TVs have teletext and remote control. There are chairs (mostly armchairs) for each guest. The bedroom sizes exceed those specified by Cumbria Tourism.

• Non-allergenic pillows are provided. Non-allergenic quilts or blankets are offered as an alternative to down.

Shower-room & WC (Ensuite)

• The facilities within the en-suite room are a WC and shower. The shower-tray is 190 mm high and the shower opening 390 mm.
